Lahore: The Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) has asked clarification from the Vice Chancellor of the University of Health Sciences (UHS) to continue clinical trials of the coronavirus vaccine, which is possible without prior approval.
Sources said the drug regulator issued a show cause notice to Prof. Dr. Javed Akram so that his position in the matter could be stated within three days or else arbitrary action would be taken against him. He said the UHS VC does not apply to the DRP’s clinical committee to conduct clinical trials of the vaccine.
DRAP clarified that the clinical trials were not approved and that the Clinical Trial Bio Study Rules 2017 were approved without its approval. It asked the UHS to immediately stop the clinical study of the vaccine and explain why clinical trials were initiated without university permission.
The show cause notice warns that DRAP will initiate arbitrary action if no response is given. Earlier, the Punjab government had sought clarification from the UHS on clinical trials.
